Following a routine safety inspection, the department has prohibited the sale of atta under the brand name 'KK' (specifically Batch No. A-22). This decision was made after a sample of the atta, produced by KK Roller Flour Mills in Jammu, underwent rigorous testing at the Food Laboratory, Kashmir. The lab report, officially documented as FSSA/K/2025-26/MR-5551 dated October 17, 2025, revealed the presence of insects within the product. This finding led to the determination that the atta was unsafe for human consumption.
Sheikh Zameer Ahmad, the Assistant Commissioner and Designated Officer for Food Safety, emphasized that the sale of food products deemed unsafe is strictly prohibited under the Food Safety and Standards Act (FSSA), 2006. This act is in place to protect consumers from potential health hazards. Consuming food contaminated with insects can pose significant health risks, making this ban a crucial step in safeguarding public health.
Consumers are strongly advised to avoid purchasing 'KK' atta. Shopkeepers and distributors in the Anantnag region have been instructed to immediately remove the product from their shelves. The ban will remain in effect until further notice from the Food Safety authorities.
